Details: This four-hour interactive workshop will provide bilingual professionals who whish to become solid interpreters an introduction to the field of community interpreting, as well as theoretical concepts and practical skills to excel in the language industry.  The workshop will cover:

  • Cultural aspects
  • Community interpreting in Alberta
  • Types of interpreting
  • Basic interpreting techniques

Your Instructor

Edmonton: Roula Salam, PhD, CTr, AComI

Roula Salam is an ATIA-certified translator and a seasoned community and court interpreter. She is Edmonton’s managing partner at Words Without Borders, and has more than 20 years of experience working as a language professional in Alberta and overseas.

She holds a doctoral degree in English Literature from Queen’s University and a certificate in Education. She served as a court and medical interpreter in Ontario and Alberta, and worked for several years with Edmonton and Calgary Police to help in police interpreting training. She teaches English at the UofA, and has taught a number of workshops in translation.

Roula’s goal is for Alberta to count with highly qualified interpreters and translators, who could provide the best language services in the industry.
