Using news websites to enrich vocabulary

webinar

How many medical terms have you learned lately? There is so much going on in the world today and news agencies give us insight into different situations, past and present. Especially in translation situations, there can be technical vocabulary that you may need that is rarely encountered in everyday conversation. However, reading and listening to the news can familiarize you with medical, legal, and financial terms in a more engaging way than studying vocabulary lists and provide a context for familiar terms that are used in a different way.

COVID and racism – a difficult intersection to interpret and translate

webinar

Have you struggled to interpret or translate a doctor’s question to a religious patient? Or, have you ever had to correct a racist statement towards your client in your own translation or interpretation? Or, have you unknowingly translated or interpreted a racist statement without realizing it? How does this affect your own mental health? These are common questions and struggles that interpreters and translators have been facing this year as they support clients through COVID-19 and the racism clients may experience.
To engage and speak openly about these issues, this two-hour dialogue will include small- group and large-group confidential discussions. To develop an understanding on these issues, this interactive webinar will discuss: different forms of racism (behavioural and systemic), microaggressions, intersectional lenses, and some statistical data on anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic, and anti-Asian racism before and during COVID-19. These aspects of racism will be discussed as they relate to religion, spirituality, and non-religion as they may or may not come up in the conversation.
